What Happened to the Family Road Trip?

Remember the days when you would cram into a car with your family for a long vacation trip to see either the beach or part of your extended family? You likely only had a Walkman as your personal entertainment or perhaps a book to read when the road was smooth. These days the long road trips are becoming much easier with the larger cars and the bountiful in-cabin amenities available. Passengers can now enjoy DVDs, MP3s players, portable game systems, or satellite radio to pass the time. Family road trips now have more life and become more enjoyable for all involved.

I recently took my family out on a long road trip from Wichita, Kansas to the mountains of Colorado. Along the way we snapped a few pictures and stopped at some of the lesser known landmarks that are unique and interesting in their own way. During our trip I remember stopping to see the "Largest Hand Dug Well" in Greensburg, Kansas. This is by no means Mount Rushmore, but it is certainly a sight to see if it is along your route. We would have never stopped there if it had not been for a friend's recommendation.

One other road trip we stopped at the bustling town of Little America, Wyoming just outside Cheyenne. Little America is just that; a colloquial and unique location with good hospitality and enough souvenirs for everyone you know. This was another location that we heard about from a friend and we would have missed had we blinked while on the road. Stopping to enjoy a bit of our homeland made the trip more enjoyable as well as relaxed.

Let's bring back the days of leisure family road trips and avoid the headaches of airport security. At least on the road you are able to pick your own entertainment, stretch your legs at unique locations, and plan your route or departure time based upon the weather. Enjoy the ride.
